Kata, Martial Arts choreography.
Uechi Ryu Karate has eight Kata. Three original
Kata, Sanchin, Seisan, and Sanseiryu were brought from China
to Okinawa by Kanbun Uechi; and the other five were developed
by his son Kanei Uechi.
As you progress in the Martial Arts, you learn
new Kata. It's said that Kanbun Uechi practiced Sanchin thrusting
for the first three years of his study.
The first five Kata are studied as prerequisites
for Black Belt. The last three Kata are practiced by Black
Belts as Black Belt Kata. Not that the first five aren't practiced
by Black Belts, they are, especially Sanchin. Others might
say Seisan is practiced as much as Sanchin.
